The Cupboard Door
- Childhood snog remembered
Based on a true incident at school at the end of term when spirits were high. I thought my luck was in with Rachael, but I suspect it was all a wind-up. I must have been about 12 at the time and I thought she was gorgeous.

She giggled with Kay, and then approached Steven and I.
Smiling still, she took my hand and drew me close to her.
It was more than my not yet adult mind could handle.
Expectation raced through me, inhaling her perfume.

I was gripped then with terror, and innocent desire.
She kissed me once, and I her, I smiled in awe, confused.
Rachael pulled my hand, guided me way across the room.
We were by the cupboard, door open wide, quite hidden.

She wrapped her arms around me, inside one small fuse blew.
"Do you like me?" Oh God how I liked her, and said, "Yes".
I kissed her, held her, the whole of Rachael filled my eyes.
Her face was soft, our tongues entwined, this was girl meets boy.

For one warm moment, the world was a pleasure to know.
But shattered then as quickly as it had been started.
Was it Steven or I that she really liked, she thought.
So Steven in turn was pulled behind the cupboard door.

But in his mouth was biscuit half chewed, not to her taste.
She returned with a face that could be good news for me.
I was in favour, not Steven, and there in full view,
As teacher returned, Rachael and I, in full embrace.

Sat back at our desks, with mine next to his, we discussed.
Between many gems of wisdom dispensed from the front,
We tried to make sense of all that had happened with her.
But we were never again behind the cupboard door.
