In The Machine
- David's mind is in the machine
Part of the story of David, who has given up his physical body and been scanned into the network. Only now as he has found the girl of his dreams is in the real world, does he question whether what he did was right.

An entity of pure though regarded her from the computer screen.
It had once been David, in some ways it still was, but much more.
Rebecca's eyes paused on the message. What ever could it mean?
"Move closer so that I can see your face." She really wasn't sure.

She moved her eyes and the message moved to follow her gaze.
"For the last 27 days I have been watching you." It now displayed.
She looked around the room, but was as alone as she'd been for days.
There was a camera on the monitor, but no connection had been made.

A window appeared with a box labelled "Please type to me here".
"Who are you?" she typed, was this all a joke, she didn't know.
In another box came the reply "My name is David, I exist in here".
"I don't believe you" she tapped in and went to close the window.

"Please believe me, I was once a man" the box appeared right there.
"I was scanned in, and now I am free" the words appeared at speed.
"No" she typed. A sense of fear came over her. She grabbed her hair.
"I have such memory, such knowledge and all the inputs I need."

"Why are you here?", Rebecca entered, still not sure of the point.
"Because I love you. I want you to be here with me in my world."
"I can't, I've too much to do, goodbye." She walked away out of sight.
When her mobile rang, it was a voice that she had never once heard.

"Be free of your body and let your spirit live in the network with me."
"It is like nothing you could ever imagine, it's a new form of life."
It was a while before she spoke, and then she did so only quietly.
"David, I'm a woman, and you're just a dream. I cannot be your wife."

He stopped to think for the first time in months. Had he made an error?
When he scanned himself in, he happily left the real world behind.
But now he knew, though he could soar in the digital net forever.
The world of Rebecca, and of love, were what he had wanted to find.
